I find that as I continue on in my career, I increasingly reflect on the foundations. I think about the great mentorship that’s fostered my body of knowledge, the challenges I’ve faced and the rewards for my enthusiasm to continue to learn and develop myself. One of the strongest foundations is NCSLI (which is a recognized leader in the international realm of measurement science), and I can’t begin to stress the value of this organization to my career as well as many others in this industry. If there was one thing I could change in retrospect, I would most certainly have gotten involved with NCSLI much earlier than I did, which was about 1999 or 2000 as I recall.

From a networking perspective alone, NCSLI has provided me with an overwhelming list of contacts, literally stretching the globe, and that list continues to grow every year. I would have never assumed in the beginning (when I simply attended NCSLI conferences and meetings) that I’d someday be interfacing with industry leaders, such as representatives from national metrology institutes (NMIs), standards bodies, BIPM (International Bureau of Weights and Measures), accreditation bodies, leaders from the industry at large, et al. We all have a common goal to improve measurement and testing.

From a knowledge perspective (let’s face it, there’s a lot to learn in this science) I’m equally grateful and can’t stress what the organization has provided, as well as the endless list of learning resources left to be explored. This obviously forms one of the core values from my perspective.

Next, there are the volunteering aspects. I think there’s no better way to summarize all the benefits (volunteering is one of the strongest binders) and the time has flown by – it’s now been 10 years since I first took my first volunteer position chairing the Healthcare Metrology Committee.

I’ve made many friends through NCSLI and very hopefully, many more for the years to come. I spend a lot more time around my friends in the industry during the year than years past. This is the pinnacle for me.
